The Navy plans a fourth controlled detonation at Kalaeloa this week to destroy various munitions and ordnances that have been found.
The controlled detonation will be done either Monday or Tuesday at the Ordy Pond remediation project site.
The Navy will dispose various items such as flares, practice bombs and other expulsive devices using a private contractor, Cape Environmental Management Inc., who is trained to execute this type of work.
Ordy Pond is located between the old Naval Air Station air field and White Plains Beach at Kalaeloa. It’s within a partially fenced area and filled with fresh water. The pond measures 200 feet across and 19 feet deep at its deepest location. The site was part of the Navy’s Base Realignment and Closure program and is currently owned by the Navy.
This will be the fourth controlled detonation at the Ordy Pond Site in Kalaeloa since 2013.
“The Navy has taken and will continue to ensure all necessary actions to protect the public and any cultural and archeological resources at the site,” said Aaron Poentis, Navy Region Hawaii environmental director.
