LIHUE >> A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after violating terms of his probation for a 2012 burglary of a Kauai vacation rental.

Noel Kinney pleaded no contest to breaking into the Hanalei vacation rental, saying he needed money to buy food. He was sentenced in 2013 to four months in jail and was given a deferral. He violated deferral terms and was given the option to participate in drug treatment on Maui.

After his treatment, he didn’t return to Kauai and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was arrested Sunday on Maui.

Kauai Prosecuting Attorney Justin Kollar says Kinney was given many chances.

Defense attorney Warren Perry says Kinney has a ninth-grade education and lacks the life skills to cope with his problems.
