The voyaging canoes Hokule’a and Hikianalia were to leave Tongatapu Tuesday or Wednesday, according to the Polynesian Voyaging Society.

The crews caught sight of the island of Vava?u at sunrise on Saturday, but lost it because of cloudy conditions.

Navigators Kaiulani Murphy and Kaleo Wong kept the canoe upwind of Tonga through Sunday afternoon. At sunset, the crews stopped sailing and decided to spend the next day trying to find land.

The canoes left Pago Pago on Oct. 16.

The canoes next stop is Tongatapu and then New Zealand.
