Lava from Kilauea Volcano has moved over a parking lot and crept within a few yards of buildings at Pahoa Recycling and Transfer Station before stopping.
The leading edge of the lava flow has not advanced in two weeks but several breakouts remain active and is continuing to advance toward Pahoa town, Hawaii County Civil Defense said Saturday morning after an aerial assessment.
The active breakouts are below Apaa Street in the area of the cemetery and several areas upslope of the Pahoa Recycling and Transfer Station.
The leading edge of the flow remained stalled about 480 feet above Pahoa Village Road since Oct. 30.
The closest active flow to Pahoa Village Road is approximately 0.4 miles upslope, near the cemetery, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said.
An active lobe upslope of the transfer station is approximately 250 yards above of Apaa Street on Friday and has widened over the past two days.
Scientists also observed an active breakout about three miles downslope from Puu Oo that was burning a small area of vegetation on Friday.
The breakouts do not post an immediate threat to area residents, Civil Defense said. The breakout on the south side of the flow on Apaa Street is widening and burning asphalt road material. All other burning with breakouts is limited to vegetation only.
