A fishing vessel that took on water 144 miles from Oahu on Sunday was safely escorted back to Honolulu on Monday.

According to the Coast Guard, the vessel Pacifica flooded as a result of insufficient shaft packing in the stern tube.

About 9 a.m. Sunday, the Pacifica crew alerted the Coast Guard that the vessel was taking on about 10 gallons of water a minute.

An HC-130 Hercules airplane crew was dispatched to the scene and dropped de-watering equipment to the vessel’s crew. The plane remained at the scene until the Coast Guard Cutter Kittiwake arrived to provide additional assistance.

The Kittiwake escorted the Pacifica back to Honolulu, arriving Monday morning.
