Autry joins Taylor’s UH basketball staff

Former Marquette assistant coach Brad Autry has joined the Hawaii men’s basketball team as an assistant coach under Benjy Taylor.

Autry, who spent six years with the Golden Eagles, is the third and final assistant on Taylor’s new staff in the wake of former head coach Gib Arnold’s firing on Oct. 28. Senque Carey and Brandon Loyd are the other assistants.

Autry was not brought over to Virginia Tech this summer when Marquette coach Buzz Williams took the head coaching job with the Hokies. Autry said it was for family health reasons.

“My mom was going through some stuff. … It was a tremendous blessing because my mom got healthy and I got a chance here. Difficult situation, but I’m thrilled to be here. God has a tremendous plan and He’s put it into place.

“I have a lot of experience. I’ve seen a lot of good basketball, and unfortunately I’ve seen a lot of bad basketball. I think I can tell the difference. I think they’re in a difficult situation and needed some assistance. Like I told Coach Taylor, whatever you need me to do, I’ll do.”

Notably on Autry’s resume, he was an assistant with Tulsa in 2000 when the Golden Hurricane notched 32 wins and reached the NCAA Elite Eight.

Autry hails from the Midwest.

UH (2-1) is coming off a 62-54 loss to High Point early Tuesday morning. The Rainbow Warriors play Hawaii Hilo (1-1) at the Stan Sheriff Center on Wednesday.
