High surf is seen at Sandy Beach as Hurricane Ana passed south of the Hawaiian Islands on Saturday. Lifeguards on Oahu made 24 rescues at Waikiki, 10 at Sandy Beach and three at Makapuu.
Waves generated by strong tradewinds combined with a north-northeast swell prompted the National Weather Service to issue a high surf advisory for east shores until 6 p.m. Sunday.
Surf along east shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and the Big Island is expected to be 6 to 8 feet through Sunday afternoon.
The north swell is generating waves of 8 to 12 feet through Saturday, but conditions are choppy because of the strong trade winds.
The Vans World Cup of Surfing is not being held Friday at Sunset Beach, despite the size of the swell.
National Weather Service forecasters expect another northwest swell to arrive Sunday night, reaching near advisory levels on east shores again Monday night and declining into Wednesday.
