Hawaii Rainbow Wahine's Morgan Mason loses control of the ball against Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers in the second half of a women's basketball game in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Shootout at the Stan Sheriff Center in Manoa on Friday, November 28, 2014.

A late surge propelled the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team to a 72-58 win over Prairie View A&M on Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

After seeing a 13-point lead cut to two, the Rainbow Wahine closed the game with a 14-2 run and won their opening game of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Shootout.

UH center Connie Morris led the Wahine (4-1) with 15 points and forward Shawlina Segovia added 14 points off the bench. Guard Morgan Mason finished with 12 points and Ashleigh Karaitiana had 11 for the Wahine.

The Rainbow Wahine next face No. 5 Stanford on Saturday. Tip off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Stanford lost to No. 11 North Carolina 70-54 in the tournament opener.

Prairie View A&M opened the game with an 8-0 run with guard Jeanette Jackson hitting two 3-pointers in the first 2:30 of play.

Segovia entered the game at the 17:10 mark and scored eight points in the post over the next 3:17 and neither team could establish much separation the rest of the half.

The Wahine and Panthers were tied nine times and traded the lead seven times before halftime and UH took a 38-36 lead into the break.

UH shot 56 percent in the first half and got 21 points off the bench.

The Wahine opened the second half with a 9-0 run and opened up a 47-36 lead on Shawna-Lei Kuehu’s layup off a steal.

UH’s lead reached 13 before the Panthers charged back with a 13-2 run, cutting the Wahine lead to 56-54 when Jackson’s jumper and free throw completed a three-point play with 8:40 left.

With UH protecting a 58-56 lead, Segovia hit a jumper from the free-throw line, Karaitiana dropped in a hook and Mason scored on a putback to give the Wahine breathing room.

Morris later scored off an assist from Mason and took a feed from Destiny King for another layup to give UH a 68-57 lead with 2:05 left.

UH didn’t allow a field goal over the final 7:45 of the game. Shamiya Brooks led Prairie View A&M (0-4) with 13 points and Jackson finished with 12.

No. 11 North Carolina 70, No. 5 Stanford 54

Senior guard Latifah Coleman hit four of the Tar Heels’ 12 3-pointers and UNC (5-0) earned its third win over a ranked opponent this season by knocking off the Cardinal (3-2).

Coleman, who entered the game with eight points this season, finished with a game-high 19 on 7-for-12 shooting from the field to go along with with six assists and six rebounds. Xylina McDaniel added 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting and Stephanie Mavunga had 10 points and eight rebounds.
