Maui authorities charged a 33-year-old Kihei man Wednesday with first-degree attempted murder for allegedly driving his car at a police officer and slightly injuring him south of Makena.

Leeward Pagan was also charged with two counts of unauthorized control fo a propelled vehicle and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and third-degree theft.

A man was allegedly driving a stolen vehicle Tuesday morning near La Perouse Bay and leaving the lot when he saw a patrol car, police said. The officer got out and stood by the driver’s side door and ordered the suspect to get out of his vehicle.

The man then allegedly accelerated the vehicle toward the officer, who jumped into the patrol car but not before he was struck by his own car door. The door was struck by the stolen vehicle, police said

Maui police also arrested Pagan on suspicion of resisting arrest, resisting order to stop motor vehicle, driving without a valid license and reckless driving. More charges may be filed, police said in a news release.
