Kauai Police identified a 56-year-old man who died in a two-car crash in Kipu Saturday, as Jonathan Renti Cruz of Kekaha.

At about 10 a.m. Saturday, a 36-year-old Koloa man,  driving eastbound on Kaumualii Highway in a Ford 150 truck, attempted to overtake a Ford Mustang when the truck clipped the front end of the Mustang, causing the truck to cross the center and broadside a Chevy sedan, Kauai Police said in a news release.

Firefighters extricated Cruz, the driver of the Chevy sedan, from his vehicle. He was taken to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Mustang, a 27-year-old woman, did not need medical attention.

The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital for treatment. Police arrested him when he was released from the hospital Saturday, on suspicion of criminal property damage, reckless endangering, attempted assault, reckless driving and manslaughter.

He was released pending investigation.

The death is Kauai’s eighth traffic fatality this year.
