LIHUE >> Developers aren’t saying why a planned Lihue shopping center is being delayed.

There was a groundbreaking for the Hokulei Village Shopping Center in February. Developers pledged to have it open as early as the end of the year. Now they say it will open sometime next summer, but won’t explain the delay, the Garden Island reported Wednesday.

“We are excited for the opening of Hokulei Village Shopping Center next year, and look forward to serving the island of Kauai,” Gerry Wolfe, Property Development Centers vice president for development, wrote in an email.

Wolfe declined to say how much the project will cost, saying that’s proprietary information.

The first phase plans to include a Safeway, a Walgreens, a Petco and a Jack in the Box restaurant. Plans also call for other tenants including a fuel station, a bank and other restaurants.

“Aside from the tenants already announced, we are also working with a number of shop tenants to enter the project, including quick-service and sit-down restaurants, personal services, and general retail,” Wolfe said. “These will be announced as leases are signed.”

Located across from Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, the project has been in the works since 2008. Construction is expected to include infrastructure improvements to surrounding county roads.
