The Valley Isle is one of 12 U.S. destinations listed in the Travel + Leisure magazine rankings of the 50 best places to visit around the globe in the coming year.
The magazine presents the information in slideshow form, versus numerically ranked lists.
According to the slideshow the apex of the top five is No. 1 Fez, Morocco, followed by Catskills, N.Y.; Rotterdam, Netherlands; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; and the Wasatch Mountains of Utah.
Las Vegas is at No. 24, with Puerto Rico at 25 and Maui is all the way down at No. 35.
The Valley Island offers visitors a “new-age melting pot,” including Balinese huts, modernist cabins and yurts, the magazine says, describing the nontraditional, non-Hawaiian accommodations available. However, it also describes the more traditional, upscale accommodations at hotels such as the Montage Kapalua Bay.
Magazine editors chose the destinations based on industry news and trends with input from contributing writers and others.
Last year’s list of best places to travel listed only 25 destinations, wtih Mokapu Beach on Maui shown in the 24th slide.
