A surfer went head over heels in high surf at the Banzai Pipeline early Wednesday morning.

The north and west shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, and Molokai and the north shores of Maui are under a high surf warning, the National Weather Service said.

The warning is in effect from 4 a.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Tuesday.

A long period northwest swell generated from a powerful low pressure system is expected to reach the islands Saturday night and rapidly build surf to warning levels on Sunday.

Warning level surf is also expected for the west side of the Big Island on Sunday night, officials said.

Waves up to 25 to 30 feet are expected Sunday night and Monday, officials said.

The waves will reach Kauai by daybreak on Sunday, Sunday morning on Oahu, and Sunday afternoon across Maui County.
