Prosecutors charged a 35-year-old Hana man for allegedly assaulting a police officer on Maui.

Joseph D. Villiarimo is charged with first-degree assault against a police officer, resisting arrest, second-degree criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct. His bail was set at $9,000.

At about 9:52 p.m. Saturday, Villiarimo failed to leave a business establishment in Hana after being requested several times to do so, according to a news release from the Maui Police Department.

Police arrived and told him he was under arrest after he continued to refuse to leave. Villiarimo then allegedly punched an officer and a struggle took place.

Additional charges may be pending, according to the police department.
