WAILUKU >> The island of Lanai’s only movie theater has reopened after being closed since the 1990s.
The Maui News reports that the theater now known as Hale Keaka underwent a $4 million renovation.
The landmark was originally commissioned by James Dole in 1926 to provide family-friendly entertainment.
It was restored by Pulama Lanai, the company owned by former Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, who owns 98 percent of Lanai.
The renovated theater maintains the original carpenter gothic architecture. It has a modern interior with air conditioning and an exterior that reflects the character of the islands in the 1930s.
The theater is now showing “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” and “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.”
Honolulu-based Mason Architects was in charge of the renovation project.
