Police have identified the pedestrian who died after being struck by a car and a Kauai police vehicle responding to the scene of the accident in Kaumakani as 19-year-old Michael Kocher Jr. of Hanapepe.

At about 9:35 p.m. Saturday, police said Kocher was walking on the roadway near the Kaumakani Post Office when he was struck by a Toyota Corolla traveling eastbound. The driver of the Toyota remained at the scene until police arrived.

A police officer who responded to the scene also struck Kocher, according to a news release from the Kauai Police Department.

Kocher was transported to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted later this week to determine the exact cause of death.

The police officer involved in the incident was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
