Hawaiian Electric Co. said there will be no rolling blackouts Tuesday night.

"Based on current conditions, Hawaiian Electric does not expect to initiate any rolling outages tonight," the company said.

On Monday, HECO cut service to several Oahu neighborhoods between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. in a series of rolling blackouts. The utility blamed the problem, in part, on the breakdown of several HECO generating units, including the largest on the island, a 180-megawatt, coal-fired power plant operated by independent power producer AES Corp, one generating unit at the Kahe Power Plant and lower output from the Kalaeloa Power Plant.

HECO said the amount of available power generation on Oahu improved since Monday night but is not back to full power.

The utility is asking customers to conserve energy between 5 and 9 p.m. Tuesday.

"This precautionary measure is to help ensure sufficient power is available to meet the early evening peak demand for electricity," HECO said. 

"Customers can help by turning off or reducing the use of air conditioners; delaying hot showers, laundry, and dishwashing; and minimizing cooking until later in the evening," the company said.
