This composite satellite image taken Friday morning shows a cold front approaching Kauai.

Southerly winds are bringing muggy conditions and the chance of showers to Hawaii through Saturday.

A cold front is expected to move over Kauai Friday, Oahu by Friday afternoon and Maui County Friday night, bringing cloudy skies and the chance of showers.

The front is expected to weaken and dissipate near Maui and the Big Island over the weekend.

Kona winds ahead of the front are bringing muggy and windy conditions. The winds could become gusty, especially on the windward side, where the southwest winds could funnel downslope after crossing the Koolaus.

Light winds ahead of the front helped Lihue set a record high temperature Thursday of 83 degrees, breaking the old record of 82 set in 2006.

Cold north winds will follow the front and should cool temperatures down and blow away the vog that’s lingered over the western islands all this week.

The forecast for Honolulu and south shores of Oahu calls for scattered showers Friday afternoon with highs between 78 and 83 and southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts to 30 mph, shifting to the west and then to north after midnight as the front passes. There’s a 50 percent chance of rain Friday night and lows should be between 59 and 70 degrees.

Saturday should see partly sunny skies with scattered showers in the morning, then mostly sunny skies with isolated showers in the afternoon and highs around 78 degrees with north winds of 10 to 15 mph.

Tradewinds and mostly dry conditions are expected for the beginning of the work week.
