Medical examiner identifies pedestrian killed in Kalihi last year

The medical examiner says a 38-year-old homeless man died of blunt force injuries to his head and injuries when he was struck by a sports utility vehicle in Kalihi Valley nearly six months ago.

The medical examiner identified the victim Thursday as Ranaj Joab, of Honolulu. who was killed Aug. 20  at about 9:50 p.m. while crossing Kalihi Street near Manaiki Place. Police said the victim was caught under the black Envoy SUV, driven by a 24-year-old man, dragged several blocks and died at the scene.

Officers arrested the 24-year-old SUV driver on suspicion of third-degree negligent homicide. He was later released pending further investigation
