In this October 2014 file photo, crews work on the H-1 freeway airport viaduct deck repair project.

Freeway construction could affect travel plans for some Super Bowl party-goers and motorists going to the Honolulu Airport this weekend.

The Department of Transportation is closing three lanes on the H-1 freeway in the town-bound direction from the Radford Drive overpass to the Airport offramp starting at 9 p.m. Friday through 12:01 a.m. Monday morning.

The work is part of the ongoing concrete deck repairs on the viaduct.

Construction crews will be applying a polyester sealant to the lanes between the Hickam Air Force Base onramp and Airport offramp. This sealant is designed to keep moisture out and could extend the life of the concrete. The material will give the concrete surface a brown tinge. It’s the first time the sealant is being used on Hawaii freeways and the DOT will evaluate whether it should be used on other parts of the freeway system.

The Kaua Street onramp to the Ewa-bound lanes of the Moanalua freeway will also be closed between the Funston Road overpass and the Puuloa Road/Tripler Hospital offramp from 7:30 a.m. until about noon Sunday for tree trimming.
