BYU scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally to a 5-4 win over the University of Hawaii softball team in the opening game of the Wilson/DeMarini Desert Classic on Thursday in Las Vegas, Nev.

UH (3-3) took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning before the Cougars tied the game on a two-run throwing error. After the Rainbow Wahine reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh on Kristina Akiona’s RBI single, BYU put runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the inning.

The Cougars (3-3) tied the game on a dropped fly ball and Mercedes O’Connor’s RBI single with two out gave the Cougars the win.

BYU’s McKenna Bull struck out seven in 3 1/3 innings of relief and earned the win. UH reliever Kanani Aina Cabrales took the loss.

The Rainbow Wahine next face Utah State and Utah Valley on Friday.

UH left the bases loaded in the top of the first and broke through with two out in the second on Kayla Wartner’s two-run single to right.

BYU got a run back in the third when McKenzie St. Clair led off with a triple and later scored on Gordy Bravo’s single to right.

The Wahine answered in the fourth on Lindsey Willmon’s RBI double to score Akiona, who reached on an error.

BYU put two runners on with one out in the bottom of the sixth on walks. After UH starter Brittany Hitchcock struck out Merrell, St. Clair reached on an infield single and a throwing error allowed the tying runs to score.

Akiona gave UH the lead again in the top of the seventh by driving in Keiki Carlos with a single to left center.

BYU’s first two batters of the seventh reached and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. A fly ball to center was dropped and Lacey Hofstedt scored the tying run. After a strikeout, O’Conner singled up the middle to end the game.
