No. 16 Oregon smashes Hawaii in season opener

Matt Eureste and Jakob Goldfarb hit home runs and Brandon Cuddy doubled twice, tripled and scored four runs to power No. 16 Oregon past Hawaii 12-0 on Friday night in the season opener in front of a sold-out Les Murakami Stadium crowd of 4,061.

Hawaii, which started six position players with no Division I experience, committed six errors. Starter Tyler Brashears took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits in 5 1/3 innings with no walks and three strikeouts.

Cole Irvin worked four innings on a limited pitch count for the Ducks, who have won 12 in a row against the ‘Bows.

Irvin struck out four and walked none, allowing two hits. Conor Harber picked up the win in relief, tossing five shutout innigns.

Alan Baldwin, Eric Ramirez, Stephen Ventimilia and Kaeo Aliviado were responsible for UH’s four hits.

The 12-run loss was the worst opening-night defeat in school history.

Junior Lawrence Chew gave up an unearned run in the ninth inning in his first outing since 2014 after missing all of last season following Tommy John surgery.

Hawaii’s six errors were the most since a 9-8 win over Valparaiso on April 22, 2011.
