Search is on for inmate who failed to check in at furlough center

State deputy sheriffs and Hawaii County police are looking for a 37-year-old inmate who did not report back in as scheduled Wednesday evening from the Hale Nani Reintegration Center in Panaewa.

Jason Cantan, an extended furlough inmate, failed to check in Wednesday, the Department of Public Safety said in a news release.

Inmates in the extended furlough program live and work outside the facility, but must check in at various times each week, the department said.

Cantan was scheduled for a parole hearing in April. He was serving time for second-degree identity theft and promoting prison contraband.

He is described as 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing 230 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
