This composite satellite image taken Wednesday shows a cold front approaching the islands from the northwest.

Winds will change direction and could become breezy Thursday as a cold front that could bring rain on Friday gets closer to the islands.

National Weather Service forecasters expect winds to shift to the southwest as the weather system approaches Hawaii.

“We might get some locally gusty winds in places, but over all it (the cold front) is not nearly as strong an event as we just had,” said Bob Burke, a meteorologist with the Honolulu office of the National Weather Service.

The strongest winds will be to the north and east of mountain ranges.

The cold front is expected to move over Kauai Thursday night and pass Oahu and Maui Friday, before weakening near the Big Island this weekend.

Vog will likely linger over Oahu and the other smaller islands until Friday until the rain washes it away or cooling tradewinds from the northeast blow it to the south on Saturday.

Another round of muggy, voggy Kona weather will return as early as Sunday as another cold front approaches the state.

The forecast for Honolulu and south shores of Oahu calls for hazy skies and light southerly winds through Thursday.

Another cool night with lows of 64 to 71 degrees is expected Wednesday.

Thursday will see winds increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the late morning and afternoon.

Skies will be mostly clear in the evening Thursday, becoming cloudy with the chance of showers later at night.

Friday is expected to be partly sunny with a 50 percent chance of rain.
