Carleton Ching was selected by Gov. David Ige as the new chairman of the Board of Land and Natural Resources.

A Hawaii Senate panel is planning a confirmation hearing to take up Gov. David Ige’s pick to lead the Department of Land and Natural Resources.

The Senate Committee on Water and Land will hold the hearing on Carleton Ching’s nomination on March 11.

Ching’s nomination to become chairman of the Department has been heavily criticized by environmental organizations.

Nearly two dozen environmental groups have called on Ige to withdraw the nomination. They say Ching lacks experience in areas like forests, coral reefs, fishing and hunting.

Ige has stood by his decision and says he believes Ching is the right person for the job.
