Campbell High in running for national award, $138,000
A team from James Campbell High School is one of 15 national finalists in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest.
The contest seeks to raise enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM education, and challenged participants to use STEM skills to address an issue affecting their community.
The Ewa Beach student team focused its efforts around the school’s steamy hot classrooms, the state proposal to use solar panels to power air conditioning, and inexpensive steps the students could take in the meantime. They powered small desk fans with salt water.
The national finalist teams were selected from among more than 3,100 applicants, and have already won technology prizes valued at $35,000, and could win another $100,000 in cash. A total of $2 million in prizes is being offered by contest sponsors.
Each team will present its project to a panel of judges March 18 at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City.
The five grand prize winners will then be selected by a panel of judges, Samsung employees and the public through online voting which is open from March 2 at 12:01 a.m. EST, through 11:59 p.m. EST, March 25, at Samsung.com/solve.
