Chris Lambert homered and had three RBIs and 10 straight Pepperdine batters reached base with two outs in an eight-run second inning as the Waves rolled Hawaii 16-1 on Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium in Malibu, Calif.

Catcher Kolten Yamaguchi added three hits and drove in two for the Waves (5-5), who evened the series at one game apiece against the Rainbow Warriors (5-6).

The 15-run loss matches the worst defeat in Mike Trapasso’s 14 years as head coach. UH lost 17-2 to Arizona State in April of 2009.

Sophomore Quintin Torres-Costa (1-2) failed to make it out of the second inning in the shortest outing of his career. The game was scoreless with two outs in the second inning when Torres-Costa issued a four-pitch walk to Lambert with a runner on third.

Brandon Caruso followed with an RBI double and Torres-Costa proceeded to give up two walks, two hit batters and two more hits as Pepperdine sent 14 men to the plate in the inning. Torres-Costa’s season ERA climbed to 10.22 after allowing eight runs on five hits and four walks in 1 2/3 innings.

Pepperdine starter Jackson McClelland (2-0) had a no-hitter broken up with two outs in the sixth inning by a Matt LoCoco double. Jacob Sheldon-Collins followed with a base hit to center to drive him in with UH’s only run of the game.

McClelland gave up three hits and one walk with two strikeouts in eight innings.

Alex Hatch gave up five runs on six hits and four walks in 3 1/3 innings in relief of Torres-Costa and Eric Gleese worked two shutout innings. Lawrence Chew gave up three runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth.

Sheldon-Collins had two of UH’s four hits.

Second baseman Stephen Ventimilia didn’t play due to a knee injury and is expected to miss the rest of the road trip.

The series continues on Saturday at 11 a.m.
