Honolulu authorities say a man in custody has died after he jumped from a police vehicle and fell from a bridge.

Hawaii News Now reports the 37-year-old man was taken for medical treatment from the Kapolei police station to Castle Medical Center on Monday.

According to authorities, the man managed to remove his handcuffs and kicked out the back window of the patrol vehicle.

Authorities say the man jumped out of the moving car on the H-1 freeway, crossed numerous lanes and then jumped over the concrete railing of the Honouliuli Bridge while officers tried to restrain and prevent him from falling.

Police say the man kicked the two officers and fell to the ground.

The man was transported to Queen’s Medical Center. He died at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
