Hawaii wins 13th straight in women’s basketball

Junior guard Destiny King scored 11 points and Hawaii ran its winning streak to 13 when defeating UC Santa Barbara 60-36 in a Big West women’s basketball game Thursday night at Santa Barbara, Calif.

King just missed a double-double when adding nine boards as the Rainbow Wahine (21-7, 13-2) outrebounded the Gauchos 42-31.

Junior center Connie Morris and freshman forward Dalayna Sampton each had nine points in a balanced attack that saw nine of the 11 Hawaii players score.

UCSB (2-26, 2-13) was led by Onome Jemerigbe’s 14 points, seven of those coming in the first four minutes of the game. The loss ended any outside chance the Gauchos had at qualifying for next week’s Big West tournament.

Hawaii has already clinched the regular-season title and No. 1 seed in the tournament. The Rainbow Wahine finish the regular season Saturday’s 5 p.m. game against Cal State Fullerton at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine outscored the Gauchos 30-13 in the second half, using a 14-0 run to break open the game. UCSB had closed to within 30-28 with 17:53 to go only to have Morris’ jumper 11 seconds later spark Hawaii’s scoring spurt.

UH coach Laura Beeman rested senior guard Ashleigh Karaitiana, one of the league-leaders in minutes played. It was her first miss after 88 consecutive games.
