The University of Hawaii softball team increased its hit total on Friday, but runs remained elusive and a Rainbow Wahine comeback attempt fell short in a 2-1 loss to St. Bonaventure in the Hawaii Pacific Health Rainbow Wahine Classic.

After being held to seven hits combined over the previous two nights, UH mustered eight hits off of St. Bonaventure pitchers Josie Borysevicz and Kristen Hickling on Friday. The Wahine put the leadoff runner on base in each of the final six innings and had a runner in scoring position in five. But the Bonnies managed to hold UH to a single run and handed the Rainbow Wahine their third straight loss.

St. Bonaventure’s Emily McDonough led off the game with a triple into the left-field corner and scored the game’s first run when she beat the throw to the plate on Grace Rooney’s grounder to second.

The Bonnies added a run in the fifth when Desiree Gonzalez led off with a double and came around to score on Lauren Waite’s looping single into shallow left with two out in the inning.

UH broke through in the bottom of the inning when Ulu Matagiese doubled and scored on Keiki Carlos’ line drive single off the fence in left center.

But the Wahine left two runners on base in the fifth, one in the sixth and two more in the seventh as St. Bonaventure celebrated its second win in the tournament to improve to 3-8.

UH freshman Brittany Hitchcock held St. Bonaventure to four hits, struck out four and walked none, but took the loss for the second straight night while Borysevicz earned the win.

UH (17-12) faces Virginia Tech at 6 p.m. on Saturday in a rematch of the Hokies’ 3-1 win on Thursday.
