This composite satellite image shows a weak cold front approaching the state from the northwest Monday afternoon.

Light winds are letting temperatures rise into the 80s in some places during the day, but nights are still cool and vog is likely to move over the western islands Tuesday, National Weather Service forecasters said.

A front moving toward Hawaii from the northeast has weakened the cold north winds. The weak front is expected to move over the islands Wednesday night and Thursday, bringing an increase in windward and mauka showers as tradewinds also return.

Until the front brings some moisture to the atmosphere, dry air over the state will allow temperatures to drop into the 50s to mid-60s at night, possibly into Wednesday.

The tradewinds are likely to stay through the weekend.

The forecast for Honolulu and south shores of Oahu calls for south to southwest winds developing in the afternoon and evening, becoming light and low temperatures of 58 to 67 degrees.

Tuesday will be mostly sunny, but hazy as vog drifts over Oahu.

The vog will remain over Oahu until Wednesday night, when the front arrives after midnight.

Most of the showers associated with the front are expected to fall over windward and mauka areas that normally get tradewind showers. But leeward areas may see some scattered showers.

The tradewinds could become breezy Thursday night through the weekend at 15 to 25 mph.
