A 30-year-old McCully man, shot by police after he allegedly tried to run down a police officer with a stolen car on March 10, is scheduled to enter a plea next month on two charges of assault, first-degree terroristic threatening and car theft.
William Andres remains in custody, unable to post $50,000 bail.
District Judge James Kawashima ruled there was enough evidence at Andres’ preliminary hearing Monday to send the case to Circuit Court for arraignment and plea at 8:30 a.m. April 13.An additional felony charge of assault of a police officer was added at Monday’s hearing.
Andres was released Wednesday from the Queen’s Medical Center, where he had been hospitalized with a stomach wound after being shot by an officer during a chase that began in Waimanalo and ended in Kaneohe on March 10.
Police initially arrested Andres on suspicion of first-degree attempted murder for allegedly trying to run over an officer. That charge was reclassified to first-degree attempted assault on an officer, according to a criminal complaint. The terroristic threatening charge stems from his actions after police approached him and ordered him to turn off the car’s engine,
Police said Andres was sitting in a stolen white Honda near Waimanalo District Park just before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. When officers approached, Andres suddenly started up the car and allegedly hit one officer’s leg. That officer fired several shots, striking the driver once, police said.
Andres then fled in the stolen Honda and was pursued briefly until he headed toward Kaneohe, police said.
Police said Andres abandoned the Honda at the intersection of Ualani Place and Kamehameha Highway near Kaneohe Elementary School after hitting another car. Police caught Andres in the yard of a home at Kuu Home Place.
Police said the officer with the leg injury was taken to Castle Medical Center and treated. The other officer’s injuries were not life-threatening.
Andres has four felony convictions, including burglary and car theft, and two misdemeanor convictions for theft and carrying a deadly weapon.
Two elementary schools, Kaneohe and Maunawili, were placed on lockdown during the incident.
