A man, 31, from a homeless camp was injured after falling 200 feet down a cliff in Hana on Thursday.

Maui County officials said the incident occurred about 5 p.m., when police, fire and medical personnel were called to an area behind Red Sand Beach in Hana. They had received a telephone call from a man, 48, who was with the victim, but could only provide vague directions to the location. Rescuers were able to hike over Kauiki Hill into a homeless camp where they located the victim.

The victim had an open head wound and, “altered mental status,” officials said in a press release.

“During his contact with fire department personnel the victim became very combative and was refusing all help,”  the press release said. It was determined that due to safety concerns Maui police from the Hana district would be flown into the campsite to assist.

The victim eventually agreed to be airlifted out of the campsite to the Hana Ball Field, where he was treated and then flown to a Maui hospital.
