Hawaii shuts down CSUN again to clinch series

Tyler Brashears scattered nine hits over eight innings and Hawaii got RBI singles in the first inning by Alex Sawelson and Eric Ramirez to defeat CSUN 3-1 on Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

Brashears (5-4) struck out six without walking a better and Quintin Torres-Costa earned his third save to clinch the series for Hawaii (14-23, 5-6 Big West).

The Rainbow Warriors have allowed one run in 18 innings against CSUN (22-15, 2-9) to improve to 5-0 at home in Big West Conference games.

Stephen Ventimilia singled and scored in the first inning and added a two-out RBI single in the sixth off CSUN starter Jerry Keel (4-4), who walked six and allowed five hits and three runs in six innings.

Four of those hits came in the first inning as Hawaii scored first for the fifth straight game.

Brashears has given up one earned run or less in six of his last seven starts. Torres-Costa struck out two in the ninth.

Hawaii will go for the sweep on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
