HILO >> An overhaul of security measures at the University of Hawaii at Hilo includes more security cameras and a request for the campus’ own security force.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports the campus also is putting a new incident reporting and tracking system in place and building a new emergency operations center.

The university hired a new security director, Darrell Mayfield, last year. He’s the former security manager at Texas A&M University.

The $5 million campus data network improvement project supports a new video surveillance system and blue-light call stations.

When completed at the end of next month, the number of security cameras on campus will double to more than 200.

The Hawaii Legislature is considering the request for university staff security officers.
