DLNR seeks comment on Kauai forest reserve management plan

LIHUE >> The state Department of Land and Natural Resources is seeking the public’s input on a draft management plan for two forest reserves on Kauai.

The plan covers the Nounou and Kalepa forest reserves.

Together, the forest reserves comprise nearly 1,400 acres of public land on the windward side of Kauai.

The Nounou Forest Reserve was established in 1918. The Kalepa Forest Reserve was established in 1944. Both were set aside to promote reforestation.

Most of the land is covered with non-native plants, though some native vegetation may still be found in upper areas of the reserves.

Comments are being accepted through May 31. The draft plan may be found at the website for the department’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife.
