No tsunami warning after major quake off Papua New Guinea

A major earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea on Monday but did not trigger any tsunami warnings for Hawaii.

The preliminary magnitude 7.4 quake hit at 3:44 p.m. Hawaii time 82 miles south-southwest of Kokopo, Papua New Guinea, at depth of 39.15 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website.

No injuries were immediately reported.
