Speed appears to be a factor in a motorcycle crash that critically injured a Waimanalo man overnight near Sandy Beach, police said.

The motorcyclist was traveling toward Waimanalo at about 12:30 a.m. when he lost control of the motorcycle, crashed and was ejected from the motorcycle near the entrance to Sandy Beach Park, police said.

Paramedics took a man in his 20s or 30s to the hospital in critical condition.

Police said the man was not wearing a helmet.

It’s not clear if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Police closed Kalanianaole Highway in both directions near the entrance to Sandy Beach Park as Traffic Division officers investigated the crash.

The highway reopened by about 4 a.m.
