Rainbow Wahine’s Koelsch sidelined with injury

VENICE, Italy » Hawaii setter Kendra Koelsch will likely be sidelined for the rest of the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team’s European tour.

Koelsch, who will be a sophomore this fall, injured her right hand on the first play of Set 4 of Wednesday’s match against the Slovenian national volleyball team. Koelsch cut her palm after sliding into the bottom of the unpadded referee’s stanchion.

Koelsch spent more than three hours in an emergency room accompanied by the team trainer and assistant coach Robyn Ah Mow-Santos.

After consultation with a physician in Hawaii, it was decided that stitches were required and she was treated overnight.

This leaves the Rainbow Wahine with just one setter, incoming junior Tayler Higgins, for the remainder of the tour. The Wahine are scheduled to play at least four more matches against Slovenian and Czech teams.
