A 32-year-old Wailuku woman died after a wave swept her into the waters of La Perouse Bay while she was hiking with a friend in Makena, Maui, police reported.

The woman, identified as Chana Mari Ichinotsubo, had been hiking and taking photographs with her friend Friday evening, the Maui County Police Department reported.

After she was swept into the ocean, her friend pulled her to shore and performed CPR, then called for help at about 8:16 p.m., police said. First responders found the victim unresponsive and continued lifesaving efforts, but she died at the scene.

The cause of death was pending the results of an autopsy.
