A 26-year-old Kailua-Kona man died Monday after apparently being overcome by high surf in waters off the Natural Energy Labs of Hawaii Authority beach park.

According to Hawaii island police, Richard Demby was swimming in the area with a friend.

The friend returned to shore but was unable to locate Demby.

Fire rescue personnel responding to a 10:20 a.m. emergency call conducted an extensive search for Demby, whose body was located around 5:45 p.m. in approximately 25 feet of water.

Firefighters recovered Demby’s body and transported it to Honokohau Harbor.
