Man killed by SUV in Nawiliwili is identified

The 37-year-old man who died after being struck by a sport utility vehicle in Nawiliwili has been identified as Michael Helppie of Lawai.

Helppie died after he was struck by the SUV near the Kalapaki seawall along Nawiliwili Park at about 1:45 a.m. Monday. An autopsy will be performed Thursday to determine the cause of death.

Police arrested the SUV driver, 34, on suspicion of manslaughter and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. He was released pending investigation.
