The hot and muggy weather over the state is likely to continue through early next week, National Weather Service forecasters said.

Light winds are allowing afternoon sea breezes to bring in humid ocean air over the islands and a chance of afternoon showers to form over leeward and interior sections of the islands.

Moisture moving up from the south and instability in the atmosphere will bring a greater chance of showers Wednesday afternoon.

Light tradewinds could return Friday, but the winds won’t be strong enough to prevent the afternoon sea breezes from forming.

John Bravender, a meteorologist with the Honolulu office of the National Weather Service, said stronger, cooling tradewinds aren’t expected until early next week.

Even the rains Wednesday may not cool things off.

“The rains could cool temperatures, but they put more moisture in the air, which will make it sticker (and more humid) afterwards,” Bravender said.

The forecast for Honolulu and south shores of Oahu calls for highs between 83 and 89 degrees through the Fourth of July and lows of 69 to 76 degrees with isolated showers in the afternoon and evening.

Scattered to numerous showers are expected Wednesday afternoon.
