Five occupants of a car involved in a fatal accident Thursday on Maui were vacationers from China, Maui police said.

The four-door 2014 Nissan Maxima was traveling down Haleakala Highway 378 (Crater Road) in the Kula area at about 12:24 p.m. when it failed to negotiate a left curve in the roadway. The car drove off the roadway onto the right shoulder and hit the embankment and a large boulder, police said.

The driver was a 72-year-old Chinese national, as were the four passengers, all adults, police said.

The three back-seat passengers were taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where a male passenger was pronounced dead.

The two others were hospitalized where they were to undergo treatment for their injuries, police said.

Police said identification of the man who died is pending notification of next of kin.

Police said the driver and front seat passenger were wearing seatbelts, but the back seat passengers were not at the time of the collision. The car’s airbags deployed in the collision.
