A leaking propane tank prompted Maui police to close Lower Main Street in Wailuku for a half-hour on Friday.

According to a Maui Fire Department release, firefighters responding to a 1:19 p.m. emergency call detected a loud whistling sound coming from a 1,150-gallon propane tank located to the rear of Nakamura Mortuary.

Police closed Lower Main Street between Waena Street and Puaala Place, as well as Kawaipuna Place and Nakila Place, while a hazardous materials team assessed the situation.

The roads were reopened after team determined that the leak did not pose a danger of explosion.

The leak was traced back to a pressure-relieve valve that opened to relieve mounting gas pressure (most likely due to high temperatures) but did not properly close.
