The U.S. Coast Guard is seeking the public’s help to locate a possible person in distress near Maui after an adult life jacket was found floating near Molokini Crater on Sunday.

A passenger vessel recovered an orange Jim Buoy life jacket around 10:38 a.m.

The vessel’s crew monitored the immediate area but saw no signs of distress, officials said. The jacket was transferred to a 45-foot Coast Guard response boat from Station Maui.

Anyone with information about the owner of the life jacket is asked to contact the Sector Honolulu Command Center at 842-2600.

The Coast Guard is advising the public to label all watercraft and equipment with contact information to quickly account for owners and prevent unnecessary searches.
