CHARLOTTE, N.C. » American Airlines says a Minneapolis-bound flight returned to Charlotte Douglas International Airport shortly after taking off when the airline received a security threat.

American spokeswoman Katie Cody said the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has since cleared the plane and the airline is working to get passengers "on their way."

Cody didn’t elaborate about the nature of the threat and referred all questions about it to CMPD. A police spokesman didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment.

Cody says the Airbus A321 was carrying 178 passengers. It turned back about 10 minutes after takeoff.
