Maui police are investigating a crash on the Hana Highway in Kahului that killed a 72-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy, and critically injured two other people Monday night.

The crash happened at about 8:49 p.m. near the Hookele Street intersection.

Police said a Ford F-150 pickup truck traveling east on Hana Highway collided with a Ford Taurus 4-door sedan turning left to Hookele Street from the highway.

The driver of the Taurus, a 72-year-old man, and a 16-year-old boy, sitting in the rear drivers side seat of the Taurus, were pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics took two other passengers from the truck to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

Police said the driver of the Taurus was a Washington state resident and the boy was from Idaho.

The driver of the pickup truck suffered minor injuries, police said.

The four people in the Taurus were wearing the seatbelts. Airbags in both vehicles deployed.

CORRECTION:  The driver and a passenger in the Ford Taurus died in the crash. An earlier version of this story said the drive and a passenger in the pickup truck died.
