The Maui Police Department has identified a tourist who died in a one-vehicle car crash as a 75-year-old man from China’s Chengdu province.

Zhang Zhongming was a passenger in a Nissan Maxima sedan that crashed into an embankment and a large boulder shortly before 12:30 p.m. Thursday when the car failed to negotiate a left curve while traveling down Haleakala Highway 378 (also known as Crater Road) about a half-mile north of Palena Place, Kula.

The vehicle’s five occupants were adults and nationals from the People’s Republic of China traveling as tourists, according to a news release.  

The vehicle’s three rear seat passengers, including Zhang, were transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the collision. 

Zhang was pronounced dead at the medical center a short while later, the release said. The other two  passengers remain at the medical center where they continue to undergo treatment for their injuries.

The driver, a 72-year-old man, and front seat passenger of the Nissan Maxima were wearing their seatbelts. None of the rear-seat passengers was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. The vehicle airbags deployed during the collision, police said.
