An United Airlines jet with 267 passengers bound for San Francisco, returned to Honolulu Airport Monday night after the pilot shut down one of the plane’s two engines because of “mechanical issues,” the airline and the Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday.

Flight 396 was about an hour into the flight when the pilot, at 10:22 p.m., declared an emergency and shut down one of the plane’s two engines, the Federal Aviation Administration reported.

The plane, a Boeing 777, returned to Honolulu and landed safely at 11 p.m.

United said the passengers would be accommodated on another flight to San Francisco on Tuesday.
